About Us

The mission of the Australian Coal Assiciation Research Program (ACARP) is to research,  develop and demonstrate technologies that lead to the safe, sustainable production and utilisation of coal.

ACARP supports those projects that receive industry-wide support and involvement. They fall within the following areas:

  • Greenhouse Gas Mitigation
  • Safety & Occupational Health
  • Environment & Rehabilitation of Mined Land
  • Community Concerns & Land Access
  • Cost of Production
  • Technical Support for Marketing Australian Coals
  • Sustainable Use of Coal

Each year the  ACARP Committees select approximately 60 projects from the 300 submitted.

Australian black coal producers contribute to the collaborative research program, which is conducted for the benefit of the coal mining industry. Coal producers have committed to pay 5 cents per tonne to fund the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). The funds are paid to Australian Coal Research Ltd (ACR), a company established by the industry to manage all aspects of the program. Project administration and program support is provided by Australian Research Administration Pty Ltd (ARA) as prime contractor.
