The NZ Resource Consortium is formed by GNS Science and Genesis Energy. The consortium, which originally also included Soild Energy (now an independent partner of CO2CRC), joined the CO2CRC in June 2004.
GNS Science is a research Institute owned by the New Zealand Government and incorporated on 1 July 1992. Their purpose is to understand earth systems and technologies and to transform this knowledge into economic, environmental, and social benefits for New Zealand. Researchers from GNS Science contribute to the CO2CRC expertise in complex petroleum reservoirs, active faulting, and risk assessment. In turn, the New Zealand investment will be enormously leveraged to resolve issues such as identifying the best sites for subsurface storage in New Zealand's complex geological environment.
Genesis Energy states that climate change is the major strategic challenge they are currently facing. As part of their commitment to being good coprorate citizens Genesis Energy has had a Climate Change Strategy in place since 2005. It addresses three key areas of concern for the company which include:
- The impact of thermal generation, particulary Huntly Power Station
- Working with our customers to encourage energy efficient practices
- Managing the company footprint (non-generation activities)
