The Victorian Government is committed to increasing the amount of energy generated from renewable sources from 4 per cent to ten per cent by 2010.
The Victorian Government is also taking other steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions:
- In December 2004 the Government released the Greenhouse Challenge for
Energy position paper that sets out the Government’s policies to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions from the stationary energy sector - The Energy Technology and Innovation Strategy (ETIS) announced in May 2005 will provide around $83 million to explore the development of large precommercial demonstration plants trialling new clean brown coal technology in the Latrobe Valley
- $16 million has been set aside for the research and development of energy efficient technologies for Victoria
- $4 million towards the funding of the CO2CRC Otway Project
- $2.2 million has been invested for the construction of a Mechanical Thermal Expression clean-coal demonstration plant at the Loy Yang power station in the Latrobe Valley
- The Centre for Energy and Greenhouse Technology has received $14.2 million investment over a three year period
- The Victorian Government is working with other states and territories to develop a national emissions trading scheme
Victorian Greenhouse Strategy Update
In April 2005, the Victorian Greenhouse Strategy Action Plan Update was launched to continue the State's efforts to tackle climate change. The Plan builds on the Victorian Greenhouse Strategy released in 2002 and includes:
- $600,000 for the Environment Protection Authority to continue its work with energy-intensive industry sectors to drive improvements in energy efficiency. This program is expected to cut emissions from industry by more than 1 million tonnes per year by 2007
- $200,000 for a pilot program for reporting and disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions by large emitters as a basis for driving the implementation of similar arrangements at the national level through the National Pollutant Inventory

Greenhose Gas Reduction Deed - The Victorian Government has signed an agreement with the owners of the Hazelwood power station in the Latrobe Valley to cap its greenhouse emissions.
