Xstrata Coal

As the world’s largest producer of export thermal coal and a significant consumer of electricity, particularly in our metallurgical operations, climate change is one of the most pressing challenges we face. Our key challenges are to reduce the direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from our operations, and to play an active role in investing in and advocating wider support for the development of technological solutions to minimise the emissions generated by our customers from burning coal as a source of energy.

In addition to assessing the key sustainability challenges and risks facing Xstrata, our businesses also consider opportunities to create value for shareholders and make a positive contribution to sustainable development. These include contributing financially and advocating wider industry and governmental support for the development and implementation of clean coal technologies, to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from using coal as a source of energy, enabling coal to continue to fuel economic and social development in a carbon-constrained world
