CCS world projects: CSEMP

Project Overview

This project is investigating the technical and economical feasibility of using CO2 to enhance coal bed methane (CBM) production, while also storing the CO2 in the same coal seams. The aim of the project is to inject and store CO2 in a coal reservoir, and monitor the effects on the volumes of produced CBM. This project will then test to determine whether there is an increase in methane production due to CO2 injection and the parameters of CO2 storage and potential enhanced methane production from the coal beds. The initial project site turned out to be unfeasible for CO2 injection, but a new site, at an already existing CBM production facility, was identified and injection began in 2005 with 10kt injected.
