CCS world projects: Fenn

Project Overview

The main objectives of this project are to reduce CO2 emissions by injecting CO2 into deep coal beds, and to investigate enhanced coal bed methane (ECBM) recovery factors and production rates as a result of CO2 injection. This project involves injecting CO2 (or CO2-rich gas) into deep coal beds, which will be adsorbed into the coal matrix, displacing the methane in the coal and creating a storage site for the CO2. This project, which is led by the Alberta Research Council, was initially divided into four phases, from an initial concept study, through to the design and implementation of a full-scale pilot project. The first four initial phases have been successfully completed, and the economics of ECBM have been assessed. The project is now into a fifth phase; the design and implementation of several multi-well ECBM projects covering a range of CO2 sources and coal bed formations. 200t was injected in 1998.
