Project Overview
In 2002, the Frio Brine Pilot Experiment, funded by the U.S. DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory, began. The site for this experiment is in the South Liberty oilfield, northeast of Houston. Before injection, extensive monitoring, including baseline aqueous geochemistry, wireline logging and vertical seismic profiling, and modelling was conducted. Injection began on October 4, 2004, and over 10 days 1,600 tonnes of CO2 was injected into the brine formation. Monitoring was carried out during injection to monitor the movement of the CO2, and is continuing to monitor the post-injection migration. This project has developed the experience necessary to plan, develop and monitor larger-scale, longer-time frame injection experiments. Phase II Summer 2006 - a second deeper injection interval in the Frio Sand package was used to conduct a CO2 injection experiment.
