Kwinana(DF3)

Project Overview

The Kwinana project is the third of Hydrogen Energy’s industrial-scale projects integrating the production of hydrogen to produce power and carbon dioxide capture and geological storage (CCS), and builds on the knowledge gained by the previous projects. This project would be the world’s first industrial-scale power project integrated with carbon capture and fuelled by coal, and the first power project to store CO2 in a saline formation. The plant is to be built in Kwinana, next to BP’s refinery, and will convert coal from the nearby Collie region into hydrogen and CO2. The hydrogen would be used to fuel a 500MW power station, while approximately 4 million tonnes of CO2 a year will be captured, transported by pipeline around 35km offshore and injected some 2km below the seabed into a saline formation. Initial studies are planned for 2007-2010, and the final investment decision to develop the plant is expected in 2011. It is then anticipated that the plant will be operational by 2014.
