CCS world projects: Moomba

The Moomba Carbon Storage Project involves three main phases, which should lead to the result of a regional carbon storage hub for eastern Australia. The first phase is the demonstration phase, based around the technical and economical feasibility of long term, high volume CO2 storage in the Cooper basin, in Central Australia. It will involve the capture of CO2 separated from the gas processing at Moomba, transporting the CO2 to the storage site, and injecting the CO2 into partially depleted oil reservoirs. The injected CO2 will re-pressurise these oil reservoirs and further oil will be able to be recovered. This process is also known as enhanced oil recovery. Storage is expected to commence in 2010, into depleted/depleting coal seams. The storage capacity during the demonstration phase is estimated to be 1 million tonnes. 20 million tonnes of CO2 per year is estimated to be the capacity after the demonstration.
