CCS world projects: Williston

The Williston Basin demonstration project is one of several CO2 sequestration demonstrations the Plain CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership has planned for Phase III, the Deployment Phase. This project will transport a minimum of 450,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from Basin Electric Power Cooperative’s Antelope Valley Station, an existing conventional coal-fired power plant in central North Dakota, and inject it into an oil reservoir located in western North Dakota or eastern Montana. This demonstration will simultaneously achieve two objectives – enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and sequestration of CO2. The storage target is the carbonate Devonian Duperow Fm or the Missippian Madison Group, which are located between 10,000 and 12,000ft respectively. Working at these depths will provide information on the technical challenges of injecting at high pressure (4900psi) and temperature (250 °F).
