SWP SACROC

Project Overview

The SACROC oil field located near Snyder, Texas was one of the first CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations in the world. The Southwest Partnership (SWP) is evaluating CO2-EOR efficiency and CO2 storage optimization at the SACROC field. Injection of 350,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, sourced from McElmo Dome, will begin in March 2008, and continue for 2 years. The injected CO2 will be intensely monitored for 18 months, and lower-intensity monitoring will be performed for the remaining period of the four-year SWP Validation Phase program. The primary research objective of this EOR-sequestration test is to evaluate and maximize efficacy of CO2 subsurface monitoring technologies, and to improve our ability to track the fate of injected CO2 and to calculate ultimate storage capacity. Approximately 475,000 tons have been injected as of December 2009.
