CCS world projects: Salt Creek

In 2004, Howell Petroleum Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, began operation of an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) project at its Salt Creek field in Natrona County, Wyoming. This project involves the injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the oil field to increase the production of oil. The CO2 that is used for injection comes from a source that would otherwise vent it to the atmosphere. Therefore, implementation of the Salt Creek EOR project serves as a means of reducing atmospheric CO2 emissions. At the end of the life of the field, the injected CO2 will remain trapped, essentially storing it within the field.
