Capture research

Economic modelling of CO2 capture systems

Purpose

To construct an economic model and use it to estimate the costs of CCS. The capture component of research aims to develop, design and cost modules to describe key components of the major CO2 and mixed gas capture technologies. The storage component aims to refine the design of compressor, transport, platform and injection well engineering and costing modules to describe key components of the major CO2 and mixed gas storage processes. Overall, an integrated CO2 and mixed gases capture and storage economic model will be developed to help analyse the economics of capturing CO2 from individual Australian sources and storing CO2 in Australian reservoirs.

Summary

The project comprises:

  • constructing software to estimate the costs of CCS;
  • using the software to compare the costs of capture technologies; and,
  • monitoring the costs of capture technologies through time and as technological improvements are made.

Researchers also assist in carrying out specific studies as required.
