Inorganic/organic hybrid membranes for CO2 separation

Purpose

The project aims to design and synthesize novel materials to act as hybrid membranes for the separation of CO2 from other gases, particularly from power plant flue gas. Such materials are not traditionally amenable to application in membrane form.

Summary

Templating and self-assembly techniques have been used to undertake the synthesis of membrane materials with controlled mesoporosity. The meospore surfaces of these inorganic materials are being organically modified to render them chemically selective for the sorption and permeation of CO2. Membrane performance is being studied and modelled.
