Electrically regenerable mesoporous carbons for CO2 capture

Purpose

The project aims to design and fabricate monolith carbons that simultaneously possess high adsorption capacity for CO2 and electrical conductivity. Conductivity will facilitate rapid desorption and adsorbent regeneration by a process known as Electrical Swing Adsorption. Carbon materials will be modified to provide basic surfaces that will adsorb CO2. CO2 adsorption/desorption behaviour will be assessed to evaluate the prospects for electrical swing adsorption with these materials.

Summary

A series of high capacity adsorbent carbons, with high mesoporous volume, high surface area and narrow pore size distribution, have been prepared. These high capacity adsorbents have been surface modified to form amine functionalised products that have good CO2 adsorption capacities, both in dry and wet gas streams. Prepared in monolithic form, the electrically regenerable properties of these functionalised adsorbents may make them suitable for CO2 capture by electrical swing adsorption.
