Performance of novel equipment for absorption systems

Purpose

Absorption of CO2 is the technology of choice for the separation of CO2 for pre- and post-combustion capture systems. The present research worldwide is to develop ways of reducing capital and operating costs for this technology.

Summary

The project aims to test and evaluate solvent absorption systems for CO2 removal, equipment comparisons, impurity tolerance and heat integration studies of CO2 recovery systems. Researchers will study the effect of promoters on K2CO3 solvent efficiency using wetted wall columns, perform tests to compare equipment performance (e.g., a range of column internals) and determine a method of removing the impurities for CO2 recovery from flue gas. Impurity removal study will include investigating the chemical properties of the multielectrolyte system formed by reaction of the impurities with the K2CO3. The process simulation will be completed and used to help optimize the solvent capture processes.
