Facilitating deployment of CCS
This research program covers cross-cutting issues that will help to address some of the technical barriers to the deployment of CCS as a key mitigation option.
Economics
This project will provide screening-level cost estimates and comparison of CCS technologies and projects for Australian conditions on a consistent basis. This will be done by
- Analysing the costs of capture for CO2 emissions from fossil fuelled power stations and energy-intensive industries.
- Costing different capture technologies including, but not limited to solvents, membranes, PSA or VSA, cryogenics, oxy-fuel technologies.
- Analysing the economics of source sink integration for specific sites across Australia.
- Maintaining our CO2CRC economics modelling software including regular updating of our costs database and indices.
- Comparing the costs of CO2 transport and storage with those of other abatement technologies.
Risk assessment
This project will test and, where necessary, develop risk assessment methodologies by drawing upon the experience of CO2CRC in undertaking capture and storage projects and the experience gained by others in undertaking projects. The project will contribute to the regulatory process and broader international studies of risk. We aim to produce a holistic risk assessment tool that will integrate all aspects of the CCS process from capture through to storage.
