Regional geological characterisation of the Gunnedah Basin

Purpose

To complete an integrated assessment of the CO2 geological storage potential of the Gunnedah Basin and the Southern Bowen Basin in order to accelerate deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage in New South Wales.

Summary

The project consists of a range of activities including reviewing and analysing publicly available data to develop a high level overview of the Gunnedah Basin CO2 storage potential. The project is conducted largely as an analytical and interpretative review, integrated with some new information gained through laboratory testing. The aim of the project is to review the region in detail, and take a structural and stratigraphic approach in helping to understand the basin-wide controls on reservoir quality and the hydrothermal and geothermal regime of the basin, as well as other geological factors impacting on the CO2 storage volume available in the basin. The major deliverables from the project include:

  • Regional Geosequestration Atlas of the Gunnedah Basin.
  • GIS-based Geosequestration Database.
  • Final Report on Portfolio Options and CO2 storage capacity estimation of the Gunnedah Basin and the southern Surat-Bowen Basins.
